Meet Dr. Owart

dr birkin owart

Dr. Owart grew up on an orchard near Ellensburg, WA. After attending Ellensburg High School, he attended Central Washington University on a full scholarship, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Music, graduating magna cum laude, and later completed a Master of Science in Biology. He was drawn to the dental profession as a way to combine his interests in art, science, and psychology, and to help people from all walks of life. He matriculated at the University of Washington School of Dentistry, where his research resulted in publications in the Archives of Oral Biology and Journal of Oral Rehabilitation. He received many awards during his time at UWSOD, including the Academy of Osseointegration’s Outstanding Dental Student Award.

After UWSOD, he practiced general dentistry in Central Washington for a few years before accepting a position in the Endodontic Residency program at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine, where he completed his endodontic training and earned a Master of Dental Science. This training program is 36 months, compared to most programs, which are 24 months. During residency, Dr. Owart held two positions at private practices, limiting his practice to endodontics. As a result of these experiences, Dr. Owart completed more than twice the average number of procedures typically required by an endodontic residency program. His thesis focused on the relationship between health care providers’ emotional intelligence and patient satisfaction. He has been recognized by his professors and peers for his technical skills, warm chair-side manner and compassionate patient care.

During Dr. Owart’s path to endodontics, he has engaged in countless hours of community service helping homeless adults, at-risk youths and migrant workers from all over Washington. Outside of dentistry, Dr. Owart enjoys competitive running and cycling, traveling, music composition, and spending time with his fiancée, Heather! Of note, he has composed and recorded two original saxophone albums and is proficient in German. His parents still live in the valley, and his sister, brother-in-law, and nieces reside in Selah.

Dr. Owart works part-time in Seattle and is ecstatic to bring a needed dental specialty to the region. He is happy to be back home in the northwest and looks forward to meeting you!
